To lead and inspire the UK's best TV News digital team to new heights following the unique remit of Channel 4 News whilst maintaining its gold standard of journalism, keeping it at the forefront of innovation and spreading it as far and wide as possible. Implement a vision for a fully integrated Channel 4 News digital production team producing content for our digital/broadcast platforms specifically prioritising a 16-34 audience demographic profile. 


As Head of Digital:

  • To deliver a vision for an integrated production team producing content for our digital and broadcast platforms to include the news website and social media.
  • To fully understand the needs of the 16-34 audience demographic.
  • To manage digital engagement with the audience using social media, and create and produce interactive and audience-based formats for the televisions news.
  • To manage a talented and innovative team taking responsibility for all web content and prioritising compliance and referral under the overall authority of the Editor.
  • To surprise, innovate, take risks with new platforms, find new talent and consistently challenge the consensus.
  • Set new goals for delivery of platform growth across all social media expected to include YouTube, Instagram, Snapchat and any other new platform(s).
  • Continue to deliver high performance results on Facebook platform while driving growth.
  • To deliver cross-platform working across all specialist units and newsgathering teams.
  • To commission original and distinctive content for the news website, liaising with Commissioning Editors across Home, Foreign and the Film Fund.
  • Develop new partnerships with the aim of seeding our content more widely and amongst new audiences.
  • Prioritise better national and regional coverage across the U.K. reflecting the whole of the country.
  • To set the highest standards in quality of writing and video preparation for the web production teams.  
  • Deliver a pipeline of fresh new talent into the digital team and manage, appraise, coach and train the current team.
  • To manage digital engagement with the audience via social media, and create and produce interactive multi-platform formats. To deliver an enhanced audience engagement platform, creating innovative and new formats.
  • To represent ITN and Channel 4 News at senior level meetings at Channel 4.
  • To take responsibility for producing training programmes for broadcast journalists to develop online production skills and vice versa.
  • To foster innovative use of technology on the website and for broadcast, integrating workflows and technology as much as possible.
  • To manage the online budget and staff in discussion with the Managing Editor and special projects with the Senior Editorial Team.
  • To ensure rosters work for online, delegating responsibility to key team members.
  • Working with the Channel 4 News Press Manager at ITN to develop and implement a press and PR strategy for news online.


As a member of the Senior Leadership Team:

  • Play a part in the editorial and operational management of the programme.
  • Contribute ideas and effort, and take shared responsibility for delivering results.
  • Champion change, engaging your direct reports in the process through supportive, clear and accurate communications.
  • Demonstrate support for planned changes through your daily role - commissioning, editing and managing your part of the team.
  • Be an advocate of policies and editorial/operational changes both within ITN and externally.
  • Accept collective responsibility for management and team decisions.


  • Substantial experience of digital production, commissioning on-the-day and planned content.
  • Good understanding of the demands of online news production, including workflows, content management systems and required skill-sets.
  • Create a compelling vision for an integrated broadcast and online production team.
  • A background in creative journalism.
  • Authoritative and dynamic leadership skills.
  • Good understanding of technology and ability to use it to find creative solutions.
  • Proven track record in project management.
  • Strategic planning skills.
  • Experience in senior editorial roles.
  • Ability to deal with high-level customer requirements.
  • Knowledge and experience of news and current affairs.
  • High quality news judgement, initiative and self-starting.
  • Excellent writing, headline writing, and sub-editing ability.
  • Technical adaptability and flexibility.
  • Understanding of Channel 4 News agenda.
  • Good interpersonal skills, team player with personal authority.
    Calm under pressure with the ability to adapt and be flexible in task and role.
  • Ability to work to a deadline.
  • Ability to effectively manage budgets.
  • Good legal understanding and ability to work in accordance with ITN and regulatory compliance procedures.
