Overview

To commission and manage correspondents and newsgathering of all C4 News' UK coverage. To inspire, manage and run home newsgathering, including commissioning, planning and exec producing of exclusive and original news stories, special investigations and LIVE news coverage.  To line manage all the specialist editors, correspondents and reporters, UK Bureaux (including Westminster) and head of planning. To manage the coverage budget for all home newsgathering. 

Responsibilities

As Head of Home News:

  •  Be responsible for devising the home news editorial strategy in line with the overall C4 News editorial strategy. 
  • Commission & deploy to home news stories & coverage for C4 News - including responding to breaking news with the news desk-  providing editorial guidance to reporters & teams. 
  • Manage the home newsgathering budget.
  • Line manage all specialist editors, correspondents and home news reporters. 
  • Line manage all specialist producers working on home news coverage.  
  • Work closely with, and line manage, the head of planning on coverage, editorial strategy and logistics.
  • To manage all the UK bureaux (including Westminster and all political coverage). 
  • Deploy teams and resources on breaking news stories. 
  • Generate and encourage distinctive, original and exclusive journalism that has an impact. 
  • Provide strong visionary and editorial leadership to the news teams of reporters and producers.
  • Provide imaginative production treatments for complex or picture challenged stories. 
  • Find new ways to engage younger audiences by covering social and political stories that they care about.
  • Ensure young people are represented on the program.
  • Promote diversity on screen and off - and be committed to all people of the UK being represented on the programme.
  • Develop new and innovative ideas for thematic coverage & executive produce special reports and high impact coverage from all across the UK. 
  • Devise an editorial strategy that ensures all of the UK is represented on C4 News. 
  • Responsible for legal and regulatory compliance on home stories. 
  • Responsible for the health and safety of all teams deployed on assignments in the UK. 
  • Liaise with other ITN Newsgathering departments. 
  • Liaise with regional broadcasters and freelance producers and camera operators. 
  • Work closely with the Film Fund commissioning editors to ensure that they know about home news priorities and news stories that are being worked on and in commissioning process.  
  • Occasional commissioning of independent reporters or independent production companies. 
  • Work closely with the Head of Digital on coverage ideas that work for both TV & digital, as well as well as training online producers and reporters for TV attachment.
  • Finding and nurturing new talent both on screen and off.
  • Represent ITN and Channel 4 News to outside bodies and organisations. 
  • Identify press opportunities for UK home coverage. 
  • Occasional duty editor responsibility for the programme.

 

As a member of the Senior Leadership Team:

  • Play a full part in the editorial and operational management of the programme.
  • Contribute ideas and effort, and take shared responsibility with the editor and deputy editor for delivering results.
  • Engage team members with supportive, clear and accurate communications. 
  • Be an advocate of policies and editorial/operational changes both within ITN and externally.  
  • Lead and/ or participate in projects or meetings on behalf of the senior team – e.g. chairing meetings, ensuring process is appropriately documented, feeding back to rest of the senior team.
  • Accept collective responsibility for management and team decisions.

 

Qualifications

 

  •  Specialist expertise of the home news and politics agenda.
  • Management experience in a newsroom. 
  • High quality news judgement.
  • Strong decision-making skills and ability to work in a strategic manner.
  • Editorial creativity and imagination. 
  • Experience of commissioning for a national news programme. 
  • Experience of deploying into dangerous environments. 
  • Awareness of Health and Safety requirements when deploying teams. 
  • Good understanding of risk.  
  • Ability to work autonomously and under own initiative. 
  • Demonstrate the ability to problem solve. 
  • Leadership skills necessary to supervise and manage senior journalists. 
  • Ability to handle and resolve interpersonal conflict. 
  • Experience of commissioning reports with difficult legal issues. 
  • Understanding of the Channel 4 News agenda. 
  • Calm under pressure with the ability to adapt and be flexible in task and role. 
  • Play an authoritative role in senior editorial meetings presenting ideas in a persuasive manner. 
  • Deploy responsibly in compliance with ITN’s Health and Safety Policies.  
  • Awareness and understanding of the financial implications of all decision making. 
  • Good knowledge of Ofcom regulations and the ITN compliance manual.
