To maintain and develop C4 News’ high quality, high impact foreign coverage. To inspire, manage and run foreign newsgathering, including commissioning, planning and executive production of stories, event coverage and outside broadcasts, for television and multimedia platforms.  Take line-management responsibility for all foreign Correspondents & foreign bureaux, inspire and deploy resources on news stories and manage the foreign newsgathering budget.



As Head of Foreign News:

  • Be responsible for foreign news editorial strategy in line with the overall C4 News editorial strategy. 
  • Commission & deploy to foreign news stories & coverage for C4 News, providing editorial guidance to reporters & teams. 
  • Responsible for operation of the foreign news desk.
  • Manage the foreign newsgathering budget.   
  • Line manage all the foreign correspondents, the International Editor, foreign producers and the Deputy Foreign Editor. Also responsible for managing freelance reporters and filmmakers working via the Film Fund when on assignment for C4 News. 
  • Management of rosters & resources, to include assignment of staff & equipment to stories. 
  • Generate ideas for & executive produce reports and special investigations.  
  • Work closely with the Deputy Editor on commissioning foreign independent films and overseeing the budget for them. 
  • Commission independent reporters or companies to cover foreign news stories and high impact films. 
  • Responsible for legal and regulatory compliance on foreign stories.
  • Responsible for health and safety of people deployed overseas, and ensure compliance to ITN’s hostile environment policy.  
  • Manage health & safety for red & amber film fund commissions. 
  • Responsible for drawing up Safety assessments, and ensuring they are adhered to. 
  • To manage and take responsibility for all hostile environment deployments.
  • Co-ordinate and assess any secret filming request and complete secret filming forms. 
  • Liaison with freelance contributors, partners & fellow broadcasters. 
  • Talent manage foreign correspondents, coaching broadcast performance and working on their on-air styles.
  • Work closely with the Head of Digital on coverage ideas that work for both TV & digital, as well as well as training online producers and reporters for TV attachment.
  • Find new ways to engage younger audiences through different storytelling and production techniques.
  • Ensure young people are represented on the programme. 
  • Promote diversity both on screen and off – and be committed to C4 News output being representative and diverse.
  • Find and nurture new talent both off screen and off.
  • Liaise with other ITN Newsgathering departments, including ITN Productions. 
  • Represent ITN and Channel 4 News to outside bodies and organisations. 
  • Identify press opportunities for foreign coverage. 
  • Occasional duty editor responsibilities for the programme. 


As a member of the Senior Leadership Team:

  • Play a full part in the editorial & operational management of the programme. 
  • Contribute ideas & effort, and take shared responsibility for delivering results. 
  • Champion change, engaging your direct reports in the process through supportive, clear and accurate communications. 
  • Be an advocate of policies and editorial/operational changes both within ITN and externally. Lead and or participate in projects on behalf of the senior team e.g. chairing meetings, ensuring process is appropriately documented, feeding back to the rest of the senior team.  
  • Accept collective responsibility for management & team decisions. 


  • Specialist expertise of foreign news and news agenda gained through field and management experience at a major broadcaster.
  • High quality news judgement and strong decision-making skills. 
  • Editorial creativity and imagination. 
  • Experience of executive producing news reports and high impact short films.  
  • Track record of major award wins. 
  • Experience of commissioning for a national news programme. 
  • Experience of deploying and manage teams in hostile and dangerous environments. 
  • Good understanding of risk and experience in assessing it.
  • Ability to work autonomously and under own initiative. 
  • Leadership and communication skills necessary to supervise and manage senior journalists. 
  • Ability to handle interpersonal tensions in stressful situations.  
  • Experience of commissioning reports with difficult legal issues.
  • Strong understanding of Channel 4 News agenda and how to cover news creatively and imaginatively. 
  • Calm under pressure with the ability to adapt and be flexible. 
  • Play an authoritative role in senior editorial meetings presenting ideas in a persuasive manner. 
  • Deploy responsibly in compliance with ITN’s Health and Safety Policies.  
  • Good knowledge of Ofcom regulations and the ITN compliance manual. 
  • Awareness of Health and Safety requirements. 
  • Awareness and understanding of the financial implications of all decision making.
