To report on general news stories in the North of England bureau based from Manchester; including live reporting from location OBs and in the studio, packaging news pictures & interviews, film-making & complex investigations, writing and producing audio & visual content for online.  To be deployed to cover breaking news at home and abroad, at short notice on occasions.



  • Produce on-the-day news packages for the news programmes on Channel 4, and any special programming as required.
  • Provide live 2-ways for the above news programmes
  • Produce on-the-day video, audio and text reports for online
  • Propose, research and provide original stories 
  • Propose, research and provide longer film pieces such as investigative stories, features
  • Create digital content around original reports, films and investigations
  • Cover breaking news stories in the UK and abroad
  • Work in difficult newsgathering circumstances in the field, including hostile environments, riots & civil disturbances
  • Provide live commentary and analysis on breaking news stories
  • Work with the Head of Home News to determine the North of England coverage strategy
  • Engage with the audience via digital media to inform and account for your journalism
  • Contribute as required to other Channel 4 output
  • To offer knowledgeable and informed coverage of your region and the most important stories, individuals and organisations within it
  • Work to tight deadlines to deliver reports and packages to the news programmes
  • Cover the shift patterns to meet the news requirements of Channel 4, including weekends and Bank Holidays
  • Be prepared to be deployed at short notice at home and abroad
  • Ensure your reporting is accurate, duly impartial and compliant with the ITN Compliance Manual, broadcast codes and the law
  • Edit your reports to broadcast quality, producing graphics & captions, sourcing your picture and completing relevant logging procedures
  • Direct camera operators on location
  • Be responsible for managing your editorial input and health and safety in the field
  • Conduct systematic assessment of risks when newsgathering


  • Experience of television news reporting
  • Understanding of the news and current affairs agenda, with areas of particular expertise and experience
  • High quality news judgement, initiative, and self-starting approach
  • Ability to tackle stories over a broad range with creativity and insight
  • Ability to work with some autonomy to high editorial and production standards 
  • Excellent writing ability
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Good broadcasting voice
  • High-quality performer in front of camera, live and recorded
  • Smart appearance and willingness to adapt to particular presentation and style requirements of Channel 4 News
  • Calm under pressure with the ability to adapt and be flexible in task and role
  • Ability to work to deadline
  • Ability to work within resource limitations & adapt frequently to changing technology & production demands
  • Understanding of online news and how to create original and distinctive content
  • Willingness to adapt in a multi-skilled, multimedia newsroom, which requires all members of the production team to use desktop editing – Assist – for picture logging & preparatory editing
